  • Dubdi Monastery - Dubdi is also regarded as Yuksum (Yuksom) Monastery and belongs to the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Established in 1701 by Chogyal Namgyal, it is considered to be the oldest monastery in the state. The word 'Dubdi' in the vernacular tongue means retreat. The monastery is a two-storeyed structure made of stone. It is situated at an altitude of 2,100 m and has an elaborately painted interior. One can find images of divinities, saints and a collection of manuscripts

    inside. There are two aisles where rare collections of manuscripts and religious texts are preserved. The monastery has an important historical connotation as it is linked to the founding of the state at Yuksum (Yuksom) in the mid 17th century by Lhetsum Chenpo and his two associate lamas. The monastery provides a magnificent bird's eye view and enables visitors to witness cupressus funebris, a species of cypress brought by Latshen Chem Po from Kham village in Tibet.

  • Rumtek Monastery  
    Located at the distance of 24 km from Gangtok, the Rumtek monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim. It was built in 1740 originally by 9th Karmapa WangchukDorje but later reconstructed in 1959. It is
    the home of monks. There are several sacred objects in the monastery. The Golden Stupa is one of the most amazing objects and it contains the relics of the Sixteenth Karmapa.
  • Enchey Monastery -This monastery is 200 years old and has retained its original structure till date. The Enchey monastery is one of the most important monasteries of Sikkim and is situated in a dense wood. This old Buddhist
    monastery was built during the reign of ThutobNamgyal. The monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order and about 200 years old
    .
  • Do-Drul Chorten Stupa
    Do Drul Chorten, the biggest stupa in Sikkim, is located on the hill hock, which is adjacent to the Tibetology Institute. Popularly known as Phurba, this stupa was built in 1945. This holy stupa was under the auspices of head of Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism,
    Trulshik Rinpoche. Built as desired by Dud-Zom Rinpoche in 1944, the stupa is girdled with 108 prayer wheels. These prayer wheels have a holy inscription engraved on it, Om Mani
    Padma Hum. It is said that while turning these prayer wheels, the person has to chant the mantras engraved on them.
